    • Their relationship needs to be genuine and enduring.

    • Not related by family
    • Live together or do not live or intend to live separately permanently

Relative visas are granted based on a close family relationship with an eligible relative or sponsor living in the country. To access this visa, the applicant must be 66 years of age or above and financially dependent on the relative residing in Australia or either the applicant or their partner’s only remaining relatives must be settled in Australia, and they wish to stay with them. For this visa type, you can be sponsored by or related to an individual who is:

This visa stream is structured to permit the children of a settled eligible Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen to come to the country to live with them. Child visas have both onshore and offshore visa options available. To be eligible for a child visa, the child has to be either a:

    • Biological child
    • Stepchild
    • Adopted Child

    Visa Subclasses

The visa subclasses for migrating to Australia under the family visa category include:

    • The Temporary Scheme – This scheme permits the family members of the Australian sponsor to enter the country and stay with them for a defined period of time and work in Australia based on the visa conditions. The family members for this scheme include parents, partners, children, or relatives.
    • The Permanent Scheme – This scheme allows the family members of the Australian sponsor to visit and stay permanently in the country. A permanent resident enjoys almost the same benefits as an Australian citizen, with a few minor exceptions. The family members for this scheme include parents, partners, children, or relatives.

The visas under the family stream migration program take a long time to process due to the high volume of visa applications. Depending on the personal profile of the applicant and their visa requirements, the processing time may vary. The application may take longer to process if the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) requires extra information or additional documentary evidence. The DHA may collect additional information from the applicants as well as external agencies. The temporary visa category is subject to minor assessment procedure and conditions in comparison to the permanent visa. It is advisable to consider the processing time while applying for a family visa.
