Skilled Migrant Visa

Currently, general skilled migration are managed under SkillSelect, which is an online service that helps Australia manage its skilled migration programme by ensuring that the programme is based on Australia’s economic needs. It supports the government in managing who can apply for skilled migration, when they can apply and in what numbers.
SkillSelect extends to a number of visas and is not limited to general skilled migration. However, under this programme, the following visa subclasses are applicable:
- Skilled Independent Visa – Subclass 189
- Skilled – Nominated Visa – Subclass 190
- Skilled – Nominated or Sponsored (Provisional) Visa – Subclass 489 Sponsored temporary visa
- Points-Based Assessment
In order to qualify for general skilled migration, you must meet a pre-determined point score.
You can earn the points through your age, your work experience, your trade or occupation and your English language proficiency.
Further, you are able to gain your points if you have close relatives living in Australia or you have studied or worked in Australia previously. Also, you can achieve points if you are sponsored by a State/Territory that needs people with your skills.
- Expression of Interest (EOI)
Under the SkilledSelect program, you have to lodge an ‘Expression of Interest’ and prepare all documents required once you have confirmed that you are eligible for a skilled migration visa.
According to the needs of Australian economy, the individuals with high scores in target occupations will be invited by the Department of Immigration to apply for a visa.
Once invited, applications are currently processed very quickly which is important to ensure that all supporting documentation are prepared adequately and the points scores are calculated correctly.
