NEWS IN! Partner Visas and other Family Sponsored Visas – Major Changes from 17 April 2019
In our November blog, we published the passing of the Migration Amendment (Family Violence and Other Measures) Bill 2016 and its associated changes once enacted.
Immigration has just announced the commencement date of these changes under Schedule 1 of the Migration Amendment (Family Violence and Other Measures) Act 2018, which will be from 17 April 2019. Whilst this bill affects all family sponsored visas, partner visa applications will be most affected given the large number of applications.
From 17 April 2019:
- A partner visa application will require the approval of the sponsor before being eligible to lodge; Those with prior character issues, especially issues associated with family violence will be heavily scrutinized’
- There will be obligations imposed on sponsors;
- There will be sanctions if obligations are not satisfied;
- Personal information may be shared
